The Truth Revealed

I'm available for conferences and school visits. My price varies according to what's involved. For kids I usually talk about writing and illustration – how stories start, picture composition, how the art is reproduced. I gear the topic to the grade level and I usually finish by doing quick sketches based on my books for the kids.

For adults, I talk about art medium techniques, the book design process, the computer programs I use like Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign or QuarkXpress. For writing workshops,
I talk about structure and plotting. However I can put together a talk on whatever the conference or school needs.

I thought about cleaning up my studio before I took these photos, but then I decided to come clean – figuratively, not literally. My studio is generally a mess. I'm a stacker. I like piles of paper and books. When I search through them for an elusive sketch or an obsure reference, I'm reminded of things I'd forgotten, images I'd thought of, information I had discovered. It often takes my writing and illustration in a new direction. Mess is part of my creative process.

This is where I do my computer work. God wouldn't have invented La-Z-boys and laptops if He hadn't intended people with bad backs
to use them.

This is a favorite piece I did of my grandmother. I just love her sitting on the Ford fender like some ganster's moll.
